Payton grew up in the vibrant and culturally rich environment of the Chicago suburbs, where she dedicated countless hours to honing her skills in various dance forms. From an early age, she immersed herself in ballet, a discipline that instilled in her a strong foundation of technique and grace. She also explored the expressive realms of pointe, jazz, contemporary, modern, character, and musical theater, each style contributing uniquely to her artistic development. This diverse training allowed her to cultivate a well-rounded skill set, enabling her to perform with versatility and passion across different genres.
After years of rigorous training and performance, Payton achieved a significant milestone by graduating from Tulane University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience. This academic pursuit was complemented by a double major in dance, reflecting her commitment to both the scientific understanding of the human mind and body and the expressive art of movement. Additionally, she chose to minor in psychology, further enhancing her insight into the emotional and cognitive aspects of dance, which is essential for both performers and educators alike.
Currently, Payton shares her love for dance with the next generation by teaching ballet to young students aged 6-7 and 8-11. In her classes, she emphasizes the importance of technique, creativity, and self-expression, fostering a nurturing environment where children can explore their passion for dance. Through engaging lessons that incorporate both traditional ballet exercises and playful activities, she aims to inspire her students to develop not only their dance skills but also their confidence and appreciation for the art form. Payton's background in neuroscience and psychology informs her teaching approach, allowing her to connect with her students on both a physical and emotional level, ensuring that they not only learn the mechanics of dance but also enjoy the journey of self-discovery that it offers.
