As the dance season approaches, it's essential to focus, get organized, and be ready to hit the dance floor.
It's tempting to believe that everything will fall into place effortlessly once dance classes resume post-summer. However, being mentally prepared is key to a smoother transition for everyone involved.
Get focused
Parents of young dancers should take a moment to prepare themselves as summer break ends and schedules become busier. Embrace the upcoming chaos, review dance schedules diligently, and gear up for busier weeks shuttling enthusiastic young dancers to and from classes.
Once you acknowledge that the leisurely days of summer are drawing to a close and the busyness of back-to-dance season is approaching, it's time to get organized.
Get organized
Start by reviewing your uniform list. Grab a pen and carefully examine the list to identify any missing items from your dance wardrobe, what you need to purchase that you didn't have last year, and which items you already have but no longer fit. This is the perfect opportunity to take out your dance shoes from the closet and try them on. Especially with children, growth spurts happen, so shoes that fit perfectly last year might be too tight this year (and the importance of properly fitting dance shoes cannot be stressed enough!).
Get some goals (and merch)
Consider your goals for the year ahead. Are there any improvements you've been aiming to make? Perhaps a new dance style you're eager to explore or a role you aspire to perform in the year-end show? Take a moment to reflect on your past year of dancing, recall the advice you've received, absorb the corrections, and plan how you can accomplish these goals in the months ahead.

For the babies and parents new to dance:
Introducing your child to their first dance class is a moment filled with excitement and lasting memories for both parents and children. Yet, it can also be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if it's the first activity your child will experience independently. At Fusion, we recognize these emotions and aim to ensure a seamless transition for both you and your young dancer.
Tips: Prepare for Day One of Class
Ensure your child is dressed appropriately.
Look into the dress code early to have ample time to buy the right attire. When your child looks and feels the part, it can enhance their confidence on the first day of dance class.
Avoiding Distractions
Secure ballet shoe laces tightly and tuck in the elastic to avoid distractions during class. For tap shoes, choose elastics or buckle straps over ribbons to prevent any disturbances. Loose laces and ribbons not only distract your child but also present a safety risk.
Dealing with Separation Anxiety and Shyness
It's common for children to feel separation anxiety and shyness on their first day of dance class. To help ease these emotions, plan a special "goodbye" routine in advance. This could include a unique hug, a secret handshake, or a comforting phrase to assure your child that you'll return to pick them up. Establishing this routine can make your child feel more secure and self-assured in their new dance environment.
Support your child:
Encourage your child to enjoy and build new friendships in dance class. Patience and support are crucial as your child adapts to the new routine and environment.
Prioritize Communication:
Do not hesitate to communicate any concerns or questions you may have. Remember, dance is a journey that requires time for progress. Celebrate each milestone and embrace the experience with your child.
Dance provides an excellent platform for children to express themselves, stay active, and develop crucial skills. Begin your journey towards a lifetime of happiness and confidence through dance. We can’t wait to see everyone!
